baby sling

April 16, 2012 · Delia 25 Comments

Look Ma no hands!

Having three kids has been a bigger adjustment than the move to two. You really do run out of hands.
So, I made a third arm…

Having three kids also makes me a little more comfortable with my lumpy body after having a baby. 馃檪 A little…

The sling doesn’t work all the time. Natalie only really likes to be in it if I’m walking around. If I sit while she’s awake, she tries to arch and squirm herself out of it. But…I’ll take what I can get.

I used this tutorial – click here. It is very detailed and gives a lot of variations. But for that reason, it is sometimes a bit hard to follow.

I had to refer back to it several times to make sure I didn’t miss anything…because it seemed too easy for how much information came with it. So for quick reference I took pictures of what I did.

But please don’t think I came up with this on my own and be sure to see the full tutorial for any questions, sizing, using different measures of fabric, how to safely wear it, etc. Jan Andrea does a very thorough job of explaining all the alternate possibilities.聽

Now for what I did…

First, measure around your body from shoulder to hip and then around your back up to your shoulder again. I used this measurement, then added two inches for seam allowance and baby allowance. At first, I added six but that was too much and I had to go back to take a few inches off. I surprised at how little baby allowance was needed.

I got 1 1/2 yards of cotton fabric from Hobby Lobby to be sure I had enough. The fabric can shrink a little after washing and you might have to get the grain to match up….it’s good to be safe.

So easy right?

It’s so fast.

Really, the part that took me the longest was trying to pick out a fabric I wouldn’t mind wearing across my body and that would go with several different outfits. I’m the type that browses almost every bolt of fabric before I decide.

I still haven’t gotten rid of the bags under my eyes, but she is sleeping much better every week. She went for eight hours last night! I sure hope I’m not jinxing myself by posting about it. 馃檪

Oh, the hope for more sleep someday! I feel for you! I don't see any under-eye bags, although I'm sure you feel them. You look great, and the fabric on the sling is cute and the baby is beautiful!

I used to make them to sell… the way I make them is a little different, but easy still. I use it with my baby too. Since her birth and still using it… she's now 9months and a half. She goes in a sitting position now… too bad I have huge backaches and can't use more often, but it's great to go shopping and things that are done very quickly. =) sorry, such a big comment! =/

I just had my third and LOVE the baby sling! Especially with an active three yr old that I need to be able to grab quickly when he tries to scoot away from me! My baby sling is made of a fleece-type material so that makes it a little more stretchy. It also has a pocket on the front which is convenient for sticking a passy/burp cloth and it has a plastic clasp for keys. Nifty. I tried to make

Super cute! I loved my baby ring sling with my second kiddo. I used it for so long and still can if I want to! My little guy wasn't a fan of the sideways hold, but loved the tummy to tummy style.

You look great! The sling is a handy thing when you need an extra hand. I had a baby carrier I would strap to myself and it worked wonders too. I do have to say I like a sling better, more comfy for baby and mommy.

Hy Delia! Congratulations for yor baby Nat!! I'm very proud user for baby sling…I only want to give you a recomendation about using yous pouch:Never allow a baby to be carried, held, or placed in such a way that his chin is curled against his chest. This rule applies to babies being held in arms, in baby carriers, in infant car seats, or in any other kind of seat or situation. This position

Very cute, I’m going to have to make one! One thing though, wearing it up around your neck rather than on your shoulder will probably cause back pain. If it gets uncomfortable for you, just try pulling it down so that it rests on your shoulder (you can google for the proper way to use it). Love the fabric you chose!
