It has been kind of rainy {and even snowy} here lately…
…so I tried to think of a good craft for a rainy day.
I came up with patches! This project is very quick, CHEAP, and easy!
The night before while I was ironing white shirts I quickly ironed scrap fabric to Wonder Under. I have heard Heat’n’Bond is also good but I have only used Wonder Under. Just follow the instructions. Very easy…
The next day we sat down and started drawing on the paper side of the fused fabric. I had to remind my son that I would only get the outline of what he drew… a few times. He worked around that by drawing on the front of the patch with a pen later. : ) What can I do?
If you can’t tell…it’s a machine. : )
I cut out his drawings and either kept them as is or helped him pick out a square or two of fabric to layer it on top of.
Then we applied it to…
his lunch box… {I got this and his backpack from DownEast outlet in West Valley City, UT…they sell mess up monogrammed Pottery Barn stuff for cheap…this lunch box was about $2. Usually I can pick out the monogramming – is that a word? – but this one was tough so we patched it up}.
his backpack strap pouch… {another machine?}
his hat (This is the “machine” you saw above. I added a contrasting layer so it would show up better)…
I even made one for my youngest son who is truck obsessed. He is also into pointing to his newest learned body part…his knees.
I slipped these on him and he happily pointed to the truck on his knee all day.
I used regular Wonder Under. If you really want it to hold you can stitch around it. You can also use heavy duty Wonder Under. If you want to patch a jean hole you can do this with those knee patches that come 4 in a pack for $1 at Walmart {I cut this one down to size}:
Then put a patch on top…or don’t : ). When they are worn that outline of the patch isn’t as obvious. I use this to patch all of our jeans and I haven’t had ONE peel off at all yet…even after almost three years.
OR…you can iron the patch you made to the “knee patch” and apply as usual for extra hold. We just made patches for fun so regular Wonder Under worked great {and can be pulled off with some effort later}.
We didn’t use all of our patches but it was fun to just play around and it uses up my fabric scraps.
It also helped pass the time on a rainy day…
Have fun crafting with your kids!
P.S. I must give the credit for the paper rain photos to Color Me Katie. She does some amazing photography with just colorful paper in her apartment.
Come to think of it…this would also be a fun rainy day activity with your kids. Make a paper scene and take pictures in front of it. Even my kids…who are sick of the camera lately loved doing this.
HAVE FUN!

Cute ideas Delia! I love reading about all the crafts you do. Maybe I'm a little jealous because I'm not very crafty, so I live vicariously through reading about your latest projects.

I love that this incorporates the kids into your craft world, rather then a dumbed-down craft for them! Plus what a cute and practical way to patch their jeans! I've got boys too, and I'm always surprised how fast their jeans get holey. My kids will love to make patches for their backpacks too! Thanks for sharing!
