As the weather warms up, we like to head out and explore. What better snack to tote along, than trail mix!
Since my daughter has a lot of food allergies, we have generally avoided trail mix up until now, because all the store bought mixes contain nuts. Then I had a “duh” moment and realized, that of course we can just make our own nut-free version! And it’s a cinch to do!
The added bonus of making your own is that you can also make it with better for you, with wholesome ingredients.
Trail mix is like salad. There are endless combinations and you really can’t do it wrong.
Basically, you just need something sweet (dried fruit, chocolate, coconut) and something salty (sunflower seeds, pretzels) and you’ve you got a no fail delicious trail mix every time!
You can really throw your own recipe together however you like, but here’s our recipe just in case you need some inspiration:
Ingredients
- 1 cup roasted salted sunflower seeds (shelled)
- 1/4 cup mini chocolate chips (we use Enjoy Life Dairy Free)
- 1/2 cup dried fruit (we use dried blue berries, banana chips, and diced dried apricots)
- 1/2 cup pretzels (smaller pieces are better in a mix)
- 1/4 cup roasted coconut chips
- 2 TBSP raw shelled hemp seed hearts (optional)
Instructions
- Mix together and serve.
Pair it with some easy to pack Capri Sun juice drink pouches, which now come in an organic variety, and you’re adventure ready!
With a serving of fruit* in every pouch and no added sugar, colors, flavors, or preservatives, Capri Sun Organic, is a great way to entice kids to snack better.
*Each pouch provides 1/2 cup fruit juice which is one serving of fruit according to the U.S. Dietary Guidelines.
