It’s raining over here. It’s a perfect day to curl up with a book…or your kindle. 🙂
It’s also a bad day to take pictures of something I made and wanted to share with you today. So, today here’s my re-post of my guest post from Jessica’s New Years Rewsewlution Series.
Hi there! I am so glad Jessica asked me to be apart of her New Years Re-sewlution Series because it provided me the motivation to do this project…which is the point of her series right? 🙂
My brother gave us a Kindle for Christmas. Isn’t he nice? Sure makes my gift look lame, but I’m really not complaining. 🙂 When we got it, one of my first thoughts was that I probably wouldn’t take it with me anywhere unless I had a case for it.
So “make a case for the Kindle” went on my mental project to do list that is ever growing and never ending. Basically…as I added it, I knew I wasn’t going to do it anytime soon.
Then…I remembered that I still had to come up with a project for Jessica’s New Years Re-sewlution. Perfect! I was going to do it and I had a deadline.
I think it turned out pretty spiffy. A bit feminine…as my husband pointed out. He did say that I would probably use it more than him anyway. 🙂
To make it, I just used scraps. Scraps of leather from an old thrift store jacket I got for 25 cents, scraps of some old fabric I found in my mom’s stash that I’ve been waiting to use for a year. It doesn’t take much. If you are buying fabric, 1/4 of a yard of each kind of material will be more than plenty.
So I measured my Kindle…
Then cut two rectangles of the leather and two of the fabric. Each 6 inches by 8 1/2 inches.
I sewed each piece of liner fabric to each piece of leather on one end, right sides together.
Opened it up and placed wrong sides together.
I sewed a 1/8 seam to sandwich it down; then increased the stitch length to 3.5 because I thought it looked nicer and it sewed through the leather better.
Next, I cut another piece of leather and fabric for the top flap.
I sewed right sides together with a pony tail elastic sandwiched in the middle. Cut triangular notches around the rounded parts. Turned it right side out and top stitched around.
I attached the top flap to the one of the rectangles with two parallel sewn lines. For the other one, I sewed on a button in the middle.
I’ve had this adorable bee button that I couldn’t find the right project for until now. Isn’t it cute?
Now sew the two rectangles together with right sides facing, leaving the top open. Snip the bottom corners off.
Turn it right side out and top stitch around. This is also known as a French seam. See how nicely it hides the raw edges?
I didn’t like how loose the elastic was so I unpicked it and re-sewed the top flap, and added another line of stitching while I was at it. Some pictures show it with it and some without. It was kind of a last minute addition.
All done! Not too hard…definitely not hard enough to procrastinate doing it for months…
which is what I was subconsciously planning. 🙂
It’s a nice snug fit and the leather is nice and sturdy. I think I love it.
Now I just need to load books onto it. I wonder how long it will take me to get around to that and then to actually reading the books?…hmmmm…. For now I’ll just be glad I can check this off my list.

Nice Kindle case! Love the bee button! My kids got me a new Kindle for my birthday in Sept but I had a big pile of books I was working my way through so I didn’t start using my Kindle until January. I looked everywhere for a case for it – Amazon, Etsy and so on but I could never find one that I really really liked so I thought about making one too. But then I decided to check Vera Bradley & I found one I really really liked there & it was on sale & it was a pretty blue print fabric. Now my Kindle can sleep in its own comfy quilted cover. But if I was gonna make one, I’d make one like the one you made but I’d maybe try it in a black suede or leather with a hot pink liner. What are you reading on your Kindle? I am just finishing up the last book of the Hunger Games series.
