If your boys are into Legos, then chances are they might be into Ninjagos too.
Such is the case with my boys. So, when I asked them what they wanted to be for Halloween, they skipped their usual circuitous route of indecision and quickly settled on Ninjagos. They chose these colors too. I definitely wouldn’t have gone the Christmas colors route on my own.
Sabra from Sew a Straight Line posted about some awesome Ninjago costumes she made for her boys last year. Sabra is a great resource for amazing boy projects, and you have to see all the great stuff she sewed for KCWC. Love that girl.
After showing her post to my boys they got even more excited to be Ninjagos. As we started panning out the details of their costumes though, they decided they wanted to be specific Ninjagos at specific stages of their ninja training. Whaaat?
I wasn’t too excited to make ninja costumes (I’ve already made one before, albeit a much less complicated version), but I decided to give it my best effort. Using my talents to make my kids happy are some of my most fulfilling moments as a mom.
I got to know a lot more about Ninjagos than I did before that’s for certain. 🙂
Now let’s meet these Ninjagos shall we?
This is…
Well, almost. 🙂 We made changes in the weapon situation and a few of the details are different. I tried to get it pretty close though.
I used bright green interlock knit from Joann, simply because they were out of the Jet Set in green, but I liked sewing with it MUCH better. It’s just a bit pricier.
I made Owen’s top, jacket style, with black jet set knit details. I painted the silver snake scale pattern on just the jacket, since it mostly covers up the pants. I also pintucked the gill? like detail on the jacket but it gets covered by the belt. The belt is black jet set knit with a gray vinyl belt “buckle” I painted with silver and black paint.
I sewed dark gray knit fabric to their face mask/”helmets” and then tried adding some silver paint as an accent.
The shoulder armor is made of fabric vinyl I sewed into inverted shallow boxes, hot glued glued together and then painted silver. To make the costumes easy to wash, I used duct tape to attach the shoulder armor. I probably should have made these shoulder pads more ostentatious and imposing, but I couldn’t figure out a good way to do that. I also didn’t finish all the edges, because I was cutting it close and well…it’s a Halloween costume. 🙂
And now…
Now, if you are familiar with the show, you know that Kai ZX’s outfit is different than the normal Kai attire. I have seen parts of episodes, but haven’t kept up with the Ninjago fashion trends very well, so I did not know this. Good thing the boys were there to make sure I got it all straight. 😉
I modified the armor, but tried to maintain the same shape. I used brown pleather or fabric vinyl and stitched and painted the details on.
I made the belts out of brown vinyl and the buckles out of gray vinyl which I painted silver. I have since added some adhesive velcro to get the belts to stay better. His shoulder pads were made in the same fashion as Owen’s, I just painted them gold/brown instead.  I also tried painting his “helmet” mask with a little less success. 🙂
After a fun trip to the dollar store for some swords and some foam board ninja stars made by me, their costumes are complete.
The boys get to wear their costumes to school but they can’t wear their masks or weapons.
Reid said, “That’s okay! Just spike my hair up like Kai!” (Which is what we had to do for our church Halloween carnival too).
They can’t wait until Halloween night when they can don their full costumes again. I’m sure there will be a lot of this going on…
NinjaaaGO!
Our prayers are with all those that are affected by Sandy. I hope you all stay safe and are able to celebrate the week!
Happy Halloween!
P.S. Courtney from mon petit lyons has an adorable Kai and Zane at her blog too. The shoulder armor she came up with is genius! Go here to see more Ninjago inspiration.

Delia you rock! Those are great! My son recently started watching Ninjago. The episodes crack me up. Soo dramatic!
Sandy has passed us and we were VERY lucky to have not sustained any damage. Yay for the power of prayer!

those are fantastic. I love all the details, and how involved your boys were in the process. We settled for a tigger onesie, hat, and orange pants this year. I’m sure my little guy will have crazy requests a plenty in the years to come, but we’re doing lazy…at least this year while he can’t protest! 🙂

First of all, these costumes are AWESOME. Seriously cool points! I nearly died thought when you said "Lloyd at this Full Potential!" A ninja named Lloyd?! That is the BEST NAME EVER for a ninja! So random!
Sabra says
oh.my.word. I am never, ever, EVER showing this to my boys. They would fall over and die from jealousy. I can't believe all the detail you put into them. They're perfect!! And I was totally laughing at how they had to be so specific to the story line. I can totally hear how a conversation with my boys would go about that. LOVE boys! LOVE your costumes. And LOVE you! Thanks for the
