Even though we are having a spring snow storm right now, I’m thinking summer.
I’ve been sewing a bit of summer too with these fun…
I’m super excited to be a part of the Pattern Anthology blogger tour.
Some of the best PDF pattern designers: Blank Slate Patterns, GoToPatterns, Shwin & Shwin, and See Kate Sew got together and assembled a collection of beautiful summer patterns.
They aptly named the eight pattern collection Sun & Surf which you can purchase as a bundle for just under $40. This is a deal compared to trying to buy the patterns separately. You can also purchase just the Sun (girl) patterns or just the Surf (boy) patterns as separate bundles. Go HERE for more information on each bundle and how to purchase them.
I sewed up Blank Slate Pattern’s Coastal Cargos from the Surf collection.
The Coastal Cargos pattern is everything you’d expect from a Blank Slate Pattern: easy to understand, thorough, and teaches complicated sewing techniques like welt pockets, a working zipper fly, and perfect box pleated cargo pockets, in a way that makes you feel like a sewing rock star.
It also goes from cool pants to slick capri length shorts with a tab and button feature.
I love linen, so I sewed these up in a nice, soft, tan 100% linen with a rusty orange pre-made bias tape for the stripe and belt loop details.
I made my welt pockets single welts instead of doubles, simply because I wasn’t paying attention and placed my pocket pieces too low. 😉 I added this cool star fabric as lining that I had scraps of in my stash from my mom and am not sure who it’s by. I wish I did though, because I would order another yard in a heart beat.
You’ll notice that Reid’s face is not showing in any of these pictures. He wouldn’t let me and was pouting the whole time because he was quite displeased that the pants weren’t entirely orange (and then changed his mind on the color again and then again). Sigh…He’s my pay back child. ;). I was this picky (and kind of still am). It’s always a risk sewing for him because he’ll either love it with all his heart or…hate it. I’m hoping the soft linen feel of these pants will win him over in time. 🙂
I sewed these in a size 4T. Reid wears a commercial 4T almost perfectly so I would say that these pants run just slightly large?? Reid is slim and a little short though, so maybe it’s the commercial sizes that run smaller? I had to cuff the pants and I added the elastic 3/4 a way around the waist instead of 1/2 way around because he is so slender. Melissa provides instructions for this change in the larger sizes. If your child is also slim (and you need to bring the waist in more), you might want to consider this option to help the pants lay more flat and even.
Overall, this is a fantastic pattern. I highly recommend it to an intermediate sewist. It is not necessarily a quick sew, but it is a very satisfying one. Melissa shares clever ways on how to install the belt loops and box pleats that I haven’t seen in her other patterns yet. I love it when patterns teach me and stretch me, which this pattern very much did.
Be sure to check out the other lovely patterns apart of the Sun & Surf collection and the other blogger reviews (see links below).
The sale only lasts through tomorrow. So, snatch your bundle up while you can!
So cute Delia! Although I don't have a little boy to sew for I'm so happy there are now some non dorky boys sewing patterns out there. Now those women in the park who tell me they don't sew because they have a boy have no excuse!
So cool, Delia. Love all the little details.
Love the orange stripe – maybe he needs an orange pair like Terra from Mama Says Sew made. Thanks again for being on tour with us! Oh, and I sew my guy a size 2 width and size 4 length – that also works for skinny kids 🙂
Super cute, Delia! And I bet his pouty face was pretty cute :).
I love it, Delia, it looks amazing! I love the tan fabric with the orange trim, it looks amazing.

these are beautiful pants. I don’t think that’s something I say about pants very often 🙂 Love ya D!
Love that pop of orange!!! Great pants 🙂
Melissa – I saw those and thought that same thing. They do look awesome in all orange. If Reid didn’t just change his mind again, I would make another pair like that. :)Sigh…Four year olds.
Justine – Yes! Don’t you just love how great the boy patterns are thanks to designers like Melissa and Shauna!?
Abby – It was, but he didn’t want me snapping pics of it. ha! Sigh.
Ledys – thanks girl
Jessica – aww. thanks. Love you to J!
Trine – the details are my fave with these. Thanks!
Jessica – I thought so too, if only Reid agreed. ha…thanks! 🙂
What a great-looking pattern! Soooo hard to find boy’s patterns that look like something a real live little guy would actually be able to run around and play in. Thanks!
Oooooo, I love those hidden little stars. This is such a great pattern.
Very cool. I think I need this pattern! {it’s the only boy one I don’t have yet!} Vincent actually asked me to stop sewing for him a few times now, since PR&P! I even made him star wars pants but he was not keen. WHAT? I know. I think it’s because I ask him to try them on so I can see if they even fit, which interrupts his playing. And also he is a massive fan of shorts and I’ve been making him pants for winter.
Whatever kid, I’m still sewing for you!
so great! I love it
LOVE the pants!! They’re so cute and look so comfy too:)
NIce. YOu make everything look fantastic.

These are so great! I love the star fabric inside. Little surprises are the best :). And I love that coral wall! What's the location? Mexican restaurant?
