I was so lucky to be included in this cool Handmade Kids Clothing Swap organized by Robin from Nested in Stitches. Basically, a group of bloggers got together, and drew secret assignments to sew for each other’s children using our chosen person’s pinterest board as inspiration. Click on the button to learn more…
The very talented, Heather from Well Crafted made this really cool top for Owen.
He has become such a cool cat lately, as you can see in these pictures. 😉 I had fun styling his outfit and finding this awesome blue wall to complement his awesome new shirt. We love it Heather!
He has never been super picky about his clothing and only exudes excitement over Legos, ocean animals, and Legos. So, when I asked him if he liked it, he shoulder shrugged “yeah.” But then, he wore it for the rest of the day after we were done with pictures, which he doesn’t do if he doesn’t like it and if it’s not comfortable. So, I take it that he really likes it! Thanks so much Heather for making him such a well-thought out, uniquely cool shirt!
Here’s Heather with how she designed it and made the cool scribbled effect…

I knew early on that I wanted to do something using scribbles—or “gestural mark-making” as we said in art school ; – )—inspired by this pin on Delia’s Boy Style board.
Figuring out how that would take shape was the biggest challenge. I tried sewing the scribbles, I tried various forms of stenciling, fabric markers, and fabric paint (using a super fine-tip applicator). None of these options satisfied me and I was about to give up on the idea when I heard about this amazing product: Inkodye by Lumi. This stuff is super cool! It’s like making sun prints, but on fabric.
For Owen’s shirt, I just drew with a black paint pen onto a sheet of acetate and then set the fabric outside to develop with the acetate on top of it. The black lines prevented the dye from developing. Voila! Scribble fabric.
The shirt pattern is from this book. I up-cycled a white, men’s dress shirt from J. Crew, so the fabric is a really nice crisp shirting weight.
I really hope Owen likes his shirt. It’s a little crazy but in a fun way, I like to think!

I’d say he does Heather! Amazing job!…and cool square buttons. That was my favorite part. 🙂 I appreciate all the thought and care you put into this special garment for Owen…and the fit is perfect!
