I couldn’t resist an 80’s music reference. 😉
My love for Rae Hoekstra’s Geranium dress pattern is no secret. See past Geraniums here, here, and here.
So, with my brother’s wedding coming up later this month, I, of course, turned to the Geranium again to help me create something for Natalie to wear. I made it in white which is the color I am celebrating today for Color Your Summer 3!
It’s a fancy version of the dress and I’m going to share a quick tutorial for the pattern hack today.
PLUS, I also get to give some dress patterns away. Yay! Not only did I sew up another Geranium, but I sewed up a Washi Dress for myself (non-wedding related). And…did you hear? The Geranium has grown up! It is now available in larger sizes for ages 6-12! Sweet.
In honor of such fun, I am giving away one of each. A small Geranium, a big Geranium, and a Washi Dress pattern!
Oh! There is so much to talk about, but…
Let’s start with the fancy lace Geranium pattern hack.
I basically added a lace yoke to the top of the dress and added a little tulle party to the bottom with a pop of yellow in between.
First, the lace yoke:
1. Take your Geranium bodice pattern and draw a line where you want the yoke to start. I chose to use the bodice with the slight cap sleeve built in. Now trace the bodice above the line on a new piece of paper and add 1/2 inch seam allowance below the line. Do the same for the portion of the bodice below the line, adding the 1/2 inch seam allowance to the top, above the line, this time. Repeat this for both back and front bodice pieces.
2. Cut out all four new bodice pattern pieces and label them. Transfer the fold labels over to the front pieces. I do not recommend doing the U cut out for this bodice. The V cut out might be okay if you can manage it without the interfacing and maybe require some top-stitching around the neckline later.
3. Cut out your fabric. You need:
-From the main fabric – one front bottom piece, two back bottom pieces
-From the liner fabric – one front bottom piece, two back bottom pieces (I used the main fabric for my liner here)
-From lace – one front top piece, two back top pieces
-From chiffon – one front top piece, two back top pieces
4. Pin and sew the lace pieces to the bottom main fabric and the chiffon pieces to the bottom liner fabric. Finish the raw edges with a zig zag stitch or serger.
5. You should now have all the bodice pieces you need to complete the rest of the pattern.
6. Before you proceed though, make sure to press and top stitch the seams down. Make sure your iron is set at a polyester (warm not hot) setting so it doesn’t melt the chiffon and lace.
Also…
I omitted the interfacing on the button placket so it wouldn’t show through the lace. The button hole on the lace portion is a bit delicate, but with some patience is totally doable.
For the skirt –
*I almost doubled the width of the gathered skirt option in the pattern to make the skirt fuller.
*I omitted any pockets. I also added a tulle skirt and a chiffon skirt underneath.
*I shortened the top skirt by an inch and lengthened the tulle skirt by about two inches.
*I didn’t hem the tulle (unnecessary) and the chiffon skirt underneath is for comfort so the tulle doesn’t get too itchy. I finished the bottom of the chiffon by singeing it with a lighter.
As the finishing touch, I sewed on some 1 inch mustard yellow grosgrain ribbon to the front of the bodice about 1/2 inch below the seam line. I only sewed a line of stitching to the bottom edge of the ribbon so that it could be pulled back tighter when tied.
Natalie is barefoot, because we still haven’t found the right shoes! Eep. She has such tiny feet (and I’m picky) which makes shoe shopping a not so tiny feat. 😉 Oh and do you spy my little photo bomber?
I love that the lace mixed with the chiffon offers a sheer look that feels fancier, but still gives almost complete coverage at the same time.
Now, are you ready for my Trillium reveal?
Ta da! 🙂
I’m a bit wrinkly from wrestling three kids into the car and from sitting in the car but you get the idea.
Blind hem for the bottom, cap sleeve at the top. I am still trying to perfect my bust darts but I’d say I got close-ish this time.
I love love this Indie Chic Woven Blue fabric from Riley Blake. I got mine HERE from Ribbon Retreat (sponsor). It’s not quite chevron…more zig zag and a really nice blue hue.
Now, I know I’m late to the Trilium party, so you may have already heard this advice, probably from my dear friends Kristin or Cherie, but here’s my two cents too:
-Sewing a bodice muslin is a must. If you want it to fit right, don’t skip this step. I just used an old bedsheet so I wasn’t wasting any money on more fabric.
-Read and follow the instructions carefully. Rae has thought of pretty much everything. If you read everything and follow it to a T then you’ll do just fine. Rae makes sewing for yourself a successful, enjoyable journey. 🙂
– It feels really awesome to wear a fitted dress you made yourself. If you haven’t gotten this pattern yet, I highly recommend it. *Please note that I did not receive this pattern or the Geranium for free. I bought both patterns earlier this year and then asked Rae to do a giveaway because I love them and her. 🙂
I plan on making more for sure, maybe with some bottom darts instead, or a lengthened bodice (so my belt doesn’t keep sliding down), or a lined bodice, oh and long sleeves. Definitely.
Thanks to my husband for taking pictures of me! 🙂
Now, are you ready for the giveaway!?
This weekend, I get to giveaway:
ONE small Geranium Pattern – sizes age 0-5
ONE big Geranium Pattern – sizes age 6-12
ONE Washi Dress pattern
A Rae dress for every age! 🙂

Facebook Follower 🙂 and I'd want the Washi Dress.
This dress is absolutely fabulous ! I want to make a Christmas version of the Geranium for my niece and was wondering if you gathered the tule and chiffon skirt the same way you did with the top white fabric ?
Thanks 🙂
Thanks! Each skirt is gathered in the same manner but separately. The skirts can be brought together when pinning or basting to the bodice. I found that to be easiest. I hope that helps!
