Do you like Almond Joy candy bars? Wellย do I have a treat for you.
I think it is perfect for Halloween too…if you aren’t too sick of candy already. ๐
It has also been nice since it is snowing up here this week! Ah!
My sister-in-law, Janet, who is the real cook in our extended family. I mean she is an excellent cook {almost as good as my mom…almost… which is saying a lot} and staying at their house for the holidays is a real treat…let me tell you.
She came up with this delicious way to make hot chocolate so that it tastes like an Almond Joy. Oh boy…it is sooooooo good.
And! She gave me the okay to share the quick easy recipe:
Almond Joy Hot Chocolate
Makes about 4-6 mugs
2 c. almond milk
2 c. coconut milk
**{you can use the canned kind or the kind in the refrigerated section. Walmart only carries the kind in cansย and I was unable to find almond milk there. For the chilled kind in a half gallon carton I had to go to the organic section of Smith’s/Kroger which also has the almond milk right next to it :). The half gallon size is a little cheaper per ounce since you get more milk for your money….but both milks are pricier than regular milk}
1/3 + semi-sweet chocolate chips {I like to add a little more in there -yum}
1/4 c. sugar
1. Combine 1/2 c. of milk {either one is fine, I used coconut milk}, sugar, and chocolate chips in medium sized pan on medium heat, until melted. Stirring occasionally with wooden spoon.
2. Add the remainder of the milk and heat to desired temperature. *I did not let it get to a boil. I heated it until steaming and it was perfect.
3. Blend with electric beaters…I pulsed it a few times with my immersion blender. It doesn’t take much.
I bought an Almond Joy bar to eat with my hot chocolate. It really tastes just like the candy bar but not as strong.
SO delicious.
My two year old couldn’t get enough.
Don’t you love chubby dimpled baby hands? I do.
Other variations:
Use regular milk for regular hot chocolate…but better because it is homemade.
Janet suggests adding some peppermint extract…yum.
My five year old recommended cinnamon, or bananas, or strawberries… Sounds good huh?:) Maybe if you use strawberry syrup or blended up bananas?
You can just use coconut milk or a combination of regular and coconut milk to make a MOUNDS hot chocolate…because sometimes you feel like a nut…sometimes you don’t! ๐
You don’t save a ton caloric wise over using regular milk, but using the almond and coconut milk did reduce the calories by 40 for the whole batch…so about 10 calories per large mug. That’s always nice and leaves more room for the candy bar. ๐

I love Almond Joy candy bars, and this hot cocoa sounds divine! ๐ Also, we have recently discovered Silk brand vanilla flavored almond milk (wow, that's a mouth full!). It's super good! Though we DO find it at Walmart (south)- in the refrigerated section, by the soy milk, etc. I've tried the Blue Diamond brand, but it's gross. The Silk kind is uber-yummy, though. Mm… I&#
