Are you looking for a way to use your creative energy for good?
Or are you just looking for a simple way to give back?
Be a Yarn Hero!
I’ve teamed up with Lion Brand and 14 other really cool bloggers to share patterns and different ways you can use your hooks and needles to spread joy and warmth this season.
I’ve turned my Rowan Crochet Hat Pattern into a Yarn He-Rowan pattern and I’m giving it away for FREE to all my fellow yarn heroes and heroines. (I’m in pun heaven right now, I tell ya).
I’m excited to be teaming up with a super hero line up of bloggers: All About Ami, Moogly, Mama in a Stitch, One Dog Woof, Make & Do Crew, Twinkie Chan, B.Hooked Crochet, Two of Wands, A Crocheted Simplicity, Sewrella, Sh*t that I Knit, Little Red Window, Underground Crafter, and Glass Posse.
And you can too! Show your moral fiber and join us in making the world a better place, one cozy stitch at a time.
To help get you excited about being a Yarn Hero I’ve got a lot of things in store you for you in this post:
- Lion Brand is sharing an awesome discount code.
- I’m offering my hat pattern for free!
- I’m sharing a great place I found to donate hats.
- I also get to host a Lion Brand yarn giveaway for two lucky winners!
Let’s get to it!

With a size range of newborn through adult large, you can use this pattern to make hats for any charity of your choice!
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
This is a paid pattern in my shop, so add it to your cart (click “add to cart”button below) and use the promo code: YARNHEROES2016 to get it for free.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I’m using the same code as the Lion Brand discount so you have one less thing to remember. 🙂 The pattern is ready for instant download, and will be emailed to you within minutes of purchase. As with the Lion Brand discount, this pattern will only be free until December 15, 2016.
DONATE
This pattern is versatile enough to work with almost any charitable hat drive, but if you need an idea, I recently found Knots of Love. It’s an organization dedicated to donating hats to patients with cancer and other illnesses that cause hair loss. My hat pattern is a snug and tightly worked pattern that is great for this organization. They do have a very specific list of what yarns they accept because they want the hats to be as comfortable as possible for their recipients. Here is an updated list of Lion Brand yarns they accept:
I used Vanna’s Choice yarn for my pattern which is very similar to the Cotton Bamboo and Heartland yarns. Because they come in larger skeins you can definitely complete a hat (or two!) with just one skein of Heartland!
GIVEAWAY
To help jump start your making and giving, Lion Brand is giving away everything you need to make a hat (or two) to two readers! You will get 2 skeins of Lion Brand Heartland yarn and a 6.00 mm hook from Clover.
The giveaway is open to readers in the United States and Canada only. There are no hoops to jump through for this giveaway. Just enter your email so I can contact you if you win.
a Rafflecopter giveaway
Now flex those maker muscles and go do some good! 🙂
P.S. BONUS GIVEAWAY!…You can also share your Yarn Hero story and win $250 worth of yarn from Lion Brand! Get all the details on the Yarn Hero page at Lion Brand.

Thank you for the pattern Delia. I am a beginner, so I am always on the look out for something easy to crochet. Can’t wait to get started.
Delia says
You are so welcome! This pattern is so fun to work up. Enjoy!
CW says
Wish there was a pattern for knitters. I don’t crochet.
Delia says
Not to worry! I am a crocheter but some of the other Yarn Heroes are knitters. I would check out the yarn hero page and see what free patterns they are sharing. 🙂 Here is one that I found: http://glassposse.blogspot.com/2016/11/scraptacular-cowl.html?m=1 …and I know there are some other knitters on the Yarn Hero squad. I hope that helps!

Your picture is just too cute!!
Delia says
Thank you Rachel!
Charity says
Haha, you are so punny! I love the photos. For some reason I’ve never considered crocheting or knitting for charitable purposes before, only sewing, but I like the idea!
Delia says
Isn’t it? Actually, my Lion Brand contact, Ben, came up with the name and I ran with it. It’s always nice to meet another person who appreciates puns as much as I do. ha!
Kristine J says
Thank you Delia, I am a beginner but am excited to try this!
Laurie says
Thank you for the easy pattern. I like making hats and keep several in my car to give away to anyone in need and local shelters. I get bored making the same hat over and over again so a new pattern is nice to keep things fresh.
Delia says
I love that you do this! What a great thing to have on hand.
Janet says
I tried a couple of times to use the code YARNHEROES2016 ” for the hat but it didn’t work.
Delia says
hmmm. I’m sorry to hear that. Email me: [email protected] and I’ll send it to you. 🙂
Erin says
Hi! What is the difference between the youth/adult small and adult large patterns? They both seem to have the same number of stitches. Thanks!
Delia says
Hi Erin! Great question. So, they both have the same number of chains for the foundation row, because they are the same height, but the adult M/L has more rows to accommodate a larger head. I hope that answers your question? Let me know if you any more questions/concerns and I’ll try to help.

Janelle says
Hi there! I frequently crochet for charity and love the thought of making this beanie. Just tried using the code “YARNHEROES2016” but its expired. I also went to your etsy site and the pattern is no longer available. Can you assist? Thank you!
Delia says
Hi Janelle! My apologies. The code was only valid through December 15th. I didn’t know that the pattern had expired on etsy though. I will go over and renew it. Thank you for the heads up! You can also purchase it through my shop if that works for you too. Here’s a link: http://www.deliacreates.com/product/rowan-hat-crochet-pattern/
Erica says
This hat is great! I think I’ll use it tó make hats for Hats 4 the Homeless. I love to crochet! I often crochet for charities but I also have an Etsy shop, because the yarn doesn’t pay for itself. Where did you buy those fabric tags for your work? Thank you!
Delia says
Thanks Erica! That is awesome! I made my tags from scraps of leather. I put some decorative stitching on them and then sewed them in place.
