Unlike with my children, I definitely play favorites with my makes and this triangle shawl scarf is pretty darn near the very top of my list!
It’s delicate, cozy, adds just enough warmth as a wrap in spring, and makes the perfect scarf companion to a coat in winter. It has also become my daughter’s favorite scarf to steal from my closet and her go to finishing touch to all her blanket forts.
I figured it was about time I make her own triangle scarf… and why not make a video tutorial while I’m at it! You know, feed two birds with one scone.

I even had a little hiccup in filming, so I had to film the beginning twice which left me with a teeny tiny scarf that was the perfect size for her teddy bear. Can you handle the cuteness?
That is what I love about this pattern though. Regardless of what size you are making, you start it the same exact way. Then you add as many rows as you want until it’s the size you want.
MATERIALS
- K/10.5 or 6.5 mm hook
- Yarn needle and scissors
- About 650 yards of Category 3/DK weight for the adult size*
*I used Loops & Threads Snuggly Wuggly acrylic yarn in soft gray. It washes up great, doesn’t pill, and is surprisingly durable. My scarf has had seen a lot of love for almost a year and you can’t see hardly any difference between it and my daughter’s newer scarf.
ABBREVIATIONS
- ch = chain
- dc = double crochet
GAUGE
4 x 4 inch square = 11 dc x 6 rows
VIDEO TUTORIAL
ROW CHART
As I mentioned in the video, after the first few rows, the pattern rotates between three repeating stitch styles. I have created a printable chart to illustrate that below. It also tells you when to work in the third loops from the front or the back and gives you a quick glance of the stitch counts for each row.
You can print it up and highlight each row as you go to take out any guesswork.

Hi Delia, I just wanted to thank you for all the beautiful, creative, free patterns you’ve posted. I have made several of your creations numerous times (in particular the mesh cowl scarf) and your site is my go to whenever I feel the urge to grab my hook. I get compliments every time I’m wearing one of your patterns! I’m currently making this triangle shawl which I’ve been hesitant about because I loathe the 3rd loop stitch, but once it started coming together, it was too beautiful to quit. Anyway, just wanted to express my appreciation for your shared talents–

Thank you Ariane for writing me such a thoughtful, encouraging message. It makes me so happy that you enjoy my patterns. I feel your pain about that third loop. It can be annoying but the results often make it worth it!
