Fall has always been my favorite season for many reasons…it brings autumn leaves, crisp air, soup for dinner, and of course pumpkins (!). Since having a little girl, I have another reason to add that list..little baby tights! I just love Natalie in tights and boots.
And what better to pair tights and boots with than a soft knit dress, like this Bateau Neck Dress?
Anneliese of Aesthetic Nest and now of Wee Muses Sewing Patterns has designed this uber versatile pattern top/dress pattern.
Now…I know you might be thinking, don’t we hear that about a lot patterns? It’s true that many patterns come with lots of great variations but this pattern is one of the champions.
Not only is there a basic neckline, but there is a ruffled collar and a pleated neckline, plus a bonus button up back variation so that you can sew this with non-knit fabrics, AND two different pocket styles.
Think that’s all? Nope. She also offers a dress extension pattern that complements the Bateau Neck Top. It offers two more sleeve lengths and two dress variations, a shift dress and a drop waist dress.
Not bad eh? That’s not even taking into account all the pattern hacks you could create around it. The basic top is full of so many possibilities.
The size range is from 18 months to 10 years and at just under $9 for the top pattern and $5 for the extension pattern, you can really get a lot of mileage out of it, for under $14.
I sewed up the drop waist dress version because I swooned when I first saw it. I knew Natalie had to have one!
My daughter is pretty petite for her age and is kind of in between 12 months to 18 months.
Since the bottom of the size range is 18 months this is what I did. I cut the 18 month size without the neckline pleat extension and then pleated it anyway. The rest is cut to size 18 months, except that I cut an inch from the bodice bottom. I really didn’t need to (and shouldn’t have), but I did because I was worried it was looking too big. It just ended up giving the top less flounce and fold.
It looks like she has plenty of room to grow for the rest of the season and even though she usually fits a 12 month bodice, the neckline fits her pretty well with that little pleat modification.
Plus, the pleat detail is so pretty.
The pattern is well written and explained, which is to be expected from Anneliese, and the fit is great! I see some short sleeve bateax sewing happening this spring, and more drop waist versions for sure!
