Our redecorating projects are coming along slowly but surely.
Mine cost a little more because I used a stretched canvas, but the idea is the same.
I typed up one of my favorite hymns and then printed it as an engineer print at Staples for just over $3.50. The thing about engineer prints is that the toner can sometimes print a little unevenly. I just went with it and didn’t expect this project to turn out pristine. The imperfections add a little handmade character after all.
I typed this song up from memory and got one key word wrong! Props to you if you can spot it. It’s only in this picture, because I went in and patched it with the right word later.
EDITED TO ADD: Actually two! Thanks to one of my readers who pointed out the misspelling of “safety” as well Oh boy… 🙂 More patching for me.
Okay…back to the how to.
I glued the paper to the canvas and let it dry. I used clear glue but I regret not digging into my drawers for the mod podge. It still worked fine, but was on the wrinkly side.
While the paper was drying, I painted black paint around the perimeter of the canvas.
When everything was good and dry, I covered the whole canvas, sides and front, with gel medium. This protects the paper and adds a nice clear texture to it. It also disguised my word patch very nicely.
And done!
Now we have a nice statement piece for our living room, which also serves as a visual reminder of the potential of our home if we live up to it.
I am not done with our living room though. You can see the pile of fabric to the left. I’m making tons of throw pillows to help soften up our couches (which are a crazy story by themselves which I’ll share later. Yes…white with three kids is nuts…later).

I don’t know if this matters…but “saftey” is spelled incorrectly. I thought I’d check the songbook just to be sure, and they do spell it “safety.” Don’t know if it matters…just thought I’d let you know! It looks great!!

Love this idea to use with our "family hymn" be though my vision(I walkned down he isle to this song in Irish Gaelic), it means so much to our family and this project would perfectly incorporate it on our "family wall"

I often love you posts, but right now I TRULY LOVE IT!!! I was just talking to someone about doing a few big statement pieces with bible verses on them. I didn't even think of a) hymn/song lyrics or b) getting them printed. LOVE IT! Keep up the good work! 🙂

Handmaidmama – I used a combination of photoshop and picasa. I painted the back black and added white text.
HI…I love this idea for gifts etc. But I am so a detail person…my question would be can you give a step by step of how you did this in Picasa or Photo shop…I have both..did you send it to them via the internet to be printed on the engineering print at the 24×36 size or did you take an printer copy in and have them do it from that? thanks Dinah

I might do a tutorial on how I made the printable in the future but I don’t have one already posted. Good idea! 🙂
As for the print, I sent them the file through their website and then had them print it from that. That way you get a nice, crisp image. You can also bring the file in on a jump drive and have them print it from that.
