Oh, that elusive self-care that we all know we need but that is always a struggle to actually do! It’s hard to make time when you feel like you don’t have time.
I’m teaming up with Aura Cacia this Mother’s Day to share my favorite hack that has helped me make time for self-care; plus a free crochet shawl pattern I designed to evoke that nurturing feeling I get when I use my favorite Aura Cacia oils.
As much as I would like a spa day everyday, 😉 that’s not realistic. Self-care only does us good when we can actually make it happen. So, my hack for finding time for me, has been to make it passive! Finding things that fill my cup while I do other things has been a great way to find time when it otherwise seems impossible. Playing my favorite jams or a podcast while I do dishes, running my diffuser with some calming Aura Cacia oils while I work, or swiping on a few dabs of my favorite lavender roll-on are my favorite ways to implement self-care with hardly any effort. It has also helped me approach less savory tasks with more motivation and joy!
Which is why I love crocheting too. I can take it on the go….waiting in line, while supervising homework time, “watching” tv with my kids. 😉 In those seasons of life when I feel like making time for being creative eludes even me, who does DIY for a living, crochet is my fall back. I can pick it up, put it down, and fit it in no matter how busy life gets.
To celebrate the self-care dance we often have to do to make it work, I designed this cozy crochet shawl/scarf. It’s perfect for wrapping up the ones you love or gifting to someone you love!
Speaking of gifts, I’m also sharing a gift guide for Mother’s Day of my favorite Aura Cacia products that I use almost daily over on their site. Go check it out and maybe pick something up for your mom or YOU for this Mother’s Day.

Let’s make a shawl shall we? (tongue twister!)
Materials
- K/10.5 or 6.5 mm hook
- About 6 oz. or 540 yards of Light weight, DK, size 3 yarn*
- Yarn needle and scissors
*I used not quite 1.5 skeins of Loops and Threads, Snuggly Wuggly in soft gray from Michaels.
Gauge
4 x 4 inch square = 11 dc x 6 rows
Abbreviations
- ch = chain
- dc = double crochet
Tutorial
I will show the beginning of the pattern and a brief explanation of how the pattern works. The full written pattern will follow.
- Ch 4
- Work two dc in the first ch (same stitch).
- Ch 2.
- Work two dc in the first ch again. This is the end of the foundation row and the start of the triangle shape.
- Ch 3 and then work two more dc in the the same stitch. The ch 3 counts as a dc stitch. Each row will start and end with three dc together in the same stitch in the first and last stitch.
- Dc, dc, and then work two dc in the chain space you created in the foundation row. Ch 2 and then work two more dc in the chain space. This pattern of 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc in the chain space is worked every single row at the tip of the triangle. Dc, dc down the side of the triangle. In the last stitch, work 3 dc in the same stitch, which will be the top of the ch 3 from the previous row.
- Turn, Ch 3. 2 dc in same stitch as ch 3. Camel dc across 6 times. 2 dc in ch space, ch 2, 2 dc in ch space. 6 Camel dc across, 3 dc in last stitch (top of ch 3 from previous row). NOTE: For this row, you will follow a similar pattern, but instead of regular dc stitches, you are working camel dc stitches. For a regular dc, you insert the hook in the top two loops. For the camel dc stitch, you insert your hook in the bottom third loop (see photo below). This pushes the top to loops to one side creating a ridge texture. Pick a right and wrong side to your shawl (doesn’t matter, but pick one and be consistent). Always try to push the top two loops to the “right” side of the shawl. This may mean that you need to insert your hook in the third loop from the front or the back depending on the row. For a more detailed tutorial on this kind of stitch, see THIS post.
- Photo 7 shows the front of the shawl with the top two loops “ridge” showing and photo 8 shows how it looks from the back.
- Mesh row – Ch 3. 2 dc in same stitch as ch 3. *Ch 1, skip one stitch, dc.* Repeat from * to * four times. 2 dc in ch space, 2 ch, 2 sc in ch space. Dc in next stitch. *Ch 1, skip one stitch, dc.* Repeat from * to * four times. Work 2 more dc together in the last stitch that you worked a dc, for a total of 3 dc in the stitch.
The general stitch pattern is work a row of dc, a row of camel stitches, and then a row of mesh stitches.
To work the dc in the previous row of mesh stitches:
Ch 3. Work 2 dc in the same stitch at the ch 3. Work 14 dc across the row, working one dc in the ch space and 1 dc in the top of the dc from the previous row all the way across. Work the 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc pattern in the chain space as with every row. Then work 14 dc across the row as you did earlier in the row. Then work 3 dc in the last stitch (top of ch 3 from previous row).
Then continue with the rotation of the three types of stitches. Each row increases by 8 total stitches, which includes the two added stitches at the beginning and end of each row (in the three stitch cluster) and the 4 dc stitches worked at the tip of the triangle (not including the ch 2).

The shawl is gorgeous! It makes me want to try being a crocheter.

Thanks Tara! <3

How can you Camel stitch without half double crochet stitches? All the tutorials for Camel stitch call for HDC.
Delia says
You can work in the third loop with a dc like you can with a traditional camel stitch in a hdc. As I was designing the pattern, I wasn’t sure what to call it, so I considered it a modified camel stitch, since the process is basically the same. Just like you can technically work a puff stitch in sc or hdc. The results just look a little differently. If you have any ideas for a name, I would love some input. I don’t know if this variation already has a name, but it would be fun to name it if it doesn’t! 😉

I love this shawl! I’m having difficulty getting started…do you have a video tutorial for this pattern? Also, what does work 2 DC together mean? Thank you!
Delia says
Thanks! I can see how that might be confusing. Just work two dc stitches in the same chain. I have thought about doing a video for this. Maybe soon!

Thank you for this pattern! I managed to finish a complete shawl in time for Easter and wore it to mass! My daughter may be stealing it, though, because I keep catching her wrapping herself in it…hehe. It worked up well once I figured out the first few steps, which were a little confusing for me.

Oh I love it! My daughter steals my makes too. haha. The beginning can be a bit tricky. I’m glad you were able to work it out!
