I made these {almost} origami paper stars in 2013 and they have been a staple in our decor ever since!
They are so inexpensive to make and hold up great year after year.
For the large, almost 12 inch wide stars, all you need is three pieces of computer sized card stock! And of course you can make them in any size. I like to make small ones from the scraps of the larger ones. They cost pennies per star!
I decided it was about time I create a video tutorial for them so you can see how easy they are to make.
Note: Once you scroll past the video, it should stick to the side of your screen so you can keep scrolling and reading. I added written instructions for clarification. You can also check out the original post HERE.
VIDEO TUTORIAL
MATERIALS
- Card stock
- Hot Glue
- Scissors
- Optional: Bone Folder
Materials Notes:
You will be working with square pieces of paper, so if you want to make an even bigger star, you can use 12×12 paper as well.
Bone folders are totally optional, but they help limit hand fatigue as folding card stock can wear out the fingers if you are making a lot of stars.
INSTRUCTIONS
- Create three squares of paper. For the 8.5 x 11 inch card stock, I fold one corner at a diagonal to create a square and then trim off the excess.
- If you haven’t already, fold your square at a diagonal, creating a triangle.
- Open your triangle to a square again. Fold corners not involved in the first fold into the crease in the middle, like you would a paper airplane.
- Fold the new side corners into the middle crease, creating a diamond shape.
- Fold the diamond in half, along the initial fold crease line.
- Repeat for all three paper squares.
- Glue two paper triangles shut. Leave one open.
- Place one glued triangle into the fold of the open triangle and glue it together into a “v” shape.
- Glue the middle of the last triangle on top of the upside down “v” shape to form a star.
You’re done!
Nestle it into your tree for a big statement ornament, hang them from a string in your window, or on your mantel…make them in bright colors for year round celebrations…not just for Christmas…the possibilities are endless!
My favorite tradition is hanging them in our windows.
If you make some, I would love to see them! Tag me on instagram, I’m @deliacreates, and I’ll share your creations in my stories!

Can you tell me what weight Cardstock you used? I’ve wanted to order some however, some is so heavy and others are “paper thin”. I need something in between. I have 19 grandchildren and great grandchildren I’m making them for Christmas! Please let me know the weight.

Sure! It’s 65 lb. paper. I hope that helps. I just bought the bulk package from Michael’s.
