Done deal.
I took the Clean Slate Pants/Shorts pattern from Blank Slate Patterns and remixed it a little bit in the same way that I did for my Project Run & Play Finale look HERE... With contrasting twill instead of leather of course.
It’s a great basic pattern that is easy to modify and personalize. The fit is great, the sewing instructions are easy to follow and Melissa provides really simple yet thorough instructions for welt pocket (which I didn’t use this time) and A ZIP FLY! They make you feel like a sewing super star! (spirit fingers)
I created some upper pieces to make them look more jean like, added back pockets, and skinnified the shorts using the Peekaboo Pattern’s Skinny Jeans pattern for reference.
I also included a pop of color in the pocket lining…just because I could. Why sew them if you can’t personalize them, right?
The pants are sewn a size 7 with a size 8 length which proved to be just right. Almost too right, actually. I am hoping he doesn’t grow out of them before summer is over! Well…yet another hand me down for Reid to enjoy in a few years. 🙂
Now Owen has more than one measly pair of shorts. Yay!
That calls for some jumping!
(I have more shorts I whipped up as well. Can’t wait to show you soon! )

I adore these! The two grays with the pop of yellow, rad! And those jumping pictures are awesome! Thank you so much for joining in!

Delia, these are great! I love the secret yellow in the pockets…you are right, why sew if you don't personalize it 🙂 Fabulously fun jumping pictures too! 🙂

I love everything about those shorts! Too cute. I definitely need to learn how to sew a fly in clothing.

These are awesome. I've never tried a zip fly. I'm kinda scared. These look so great, and they don't look snug at all. I'm betting on a whole summer of wear.

Thanks gals! 🙂
Jackie and Heidi- Melissa is a great teacher! The pattern is very helpful but I think she also has a free tutorial for a zip fly on her site : mellysews.com. If you feel comfortable drafting your own zipper fly pieces that is a good way to go.

Very cute! I love the contrasting pockets. 🙂

Love the shorts and those contrasting back pockets. I love how easy this pattern is to personalize and her instructions for the working zipper are great. I may have never learned to put one in without this pattern. Now when the boys ask me for just an elastic waist, I get all sad because I COULD have done the zipper.

Love these shorts! The stealth pop of yellow is my absolute favorite part but all the modifications you made are awesome!

awesome shorts! they look so current and professional. I just confronted the "my kid only has one pair of shorts" problem too. But part of that was because she refused to wear shorts, so there was no sense in giving her any. When she suddenly decided shorts were awesome I had to move fast! lol

The shorts look great! I love the contrast pockets.:) I'm in the same boat with my middle girl having a ton of shorts but my youngest only has a couple of pairs that fit. Guess who I'll be sewing for next week!;)
