Mossy Monogrammed Letter

I covered this wooden letter in dollar store moss and hung it on my door…fretted…hated it…didn’t want to pick all the moss off and start over with another idea…and then came up with this:

I used Dana’s method from MADE of covering something in acorns except I used beans. Speaking of…I did a bean wreath a while ago with small red beans and spray painted them white as you can see here. I like the small beans look although the lima beans that I have seen some people using would have been WAY faster. This took me FOREVER. Still, I adore how simple and fresh it looks in our eating area.

Okay, okay…back to topic – so I covered a wooden letter from Michael’s with moss:

I started using Elmer’s glue but hot glue it the way to go here…unless you are afraid of getting burned.

I got a empty frame from DI/thrift store. I used this distressed wax painting method that Jessica from Happy Together just showcased this week. It worked GREAT. I love, love this method. You just melt a candle and rub the melted wax all over the wood. Then scrape most of it off and paint. {Once the paint dries you scrape it off and it lets the dark paint show through – see the tutorial for better explanation}.

I put on two coats of white toll paint.
I cut a piece of cardboard to fit in the back of the frame and traced what would show through the frame. Using that traced line as a guideline I filled the cardboard with beans. This only took me 30 minutes or so. Straight lines on a flat surface are much easier than a curvy wreath. I was STOKED to have it done so fast. I then spray painted it and also did a coat on the frame. I did it so fast that I forgot to take a picture when I did it, so this will have to do.

Once that was done I scraped off the wax on the frame with an old credit card and glued the bean backing in with hot glue. I didn’t like how overly white the beans were so I took a wet sponge and dabbed some brown toll paint on it. I then wiped off as much of the paint as I could and wiped the sponge over all the beans. This muted the white just enough.

I then glued a piece of grass covered wire onto the back and glued the mossy letter on the front. Voila!

This is my Easter front door decor. The moss reminds me of that cute Easter basket Disney did here.

It’s okay if you think it’s weird. My husband hates it. : ) Just add it to the list honey, but thanks for letting me put it up anyway. He’s the best.
